My Students

My students are faced with the challenge of passing a state math assessment this year. This will be the first time they will be taking a test that is this important. I feel that a more hands-on approach is what they need to practice the basic math skills needed to succeed.

I teach third grade in a low income area.

My students are hard workers who put effort in all that they do. However, because our school is located in a high poverty area, we lack many of the resources needed to practice the skills that are taught. There are twenty eager learners hoping to pass the New York State tests this year. My third graders are having trouble with basic addition, subtraction, time, money, and geometry skills. They are struggling with the more difficult concepts learned in third grade because they lack these basics. I have found that my students tend to be visual and "hands-on" learners. They better understand concepts when the are able to see them in front of them.

My Project

Having some hands-on materials to visualize, touch, and to manipulate will help cement these math concepts. I am requesting some materials for learning centers so that I can take the struggling students into small group settings and give them extra instruction and practice. Materials such as the ones I am requesting will motivate my students to want to learn. They will want to interact with the different activities and they will want to discuss what they are learning. Gradually they will be implementing higher level thinking skills.

As a contributor, you will impact my students' lives in ways you can not imagine.

My students will be able to see the abstract concepts that they are having difficulty with which will allow them to perform at the level they should. Please help my students do well this year and in the future!
