This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a blank slate. In year one Kindergarten, I get many students that have never been to school before. It's my job to show them that school is awesome, learning is fun, and sitting at your desk all day is not what we do! We cover a lot of academics, along with social and emotional learning each day.

My school believes in "Kindergarten to College," which is a huge motivator for our families, most of whom live near the poverty line.

It is my privilege to begin their journey to success with hands-on learning and interactive lessons.

My Project

Many students in my Year One Kindergarten class are coming to school for the very first time. Everything is new to them, from backpacks and desks all the way to clipboards and pointers. Even the most everyday item used in school is something they have never encountered before.

Using engaging materials that students are familiar with makes learning more meaningful.

The sorting mats with real-life objects that the students can use will help give them a better understanding of how to categorize things. The dinosaur counters are another fun and engaging way to keep students excited about learning, and the number search tray supports counting and fine motor skills at the same time.

These math tools are interesting to the students and keep them engaged in learning without them even realizing it. Learning through play is important at their age and these materials feel like play while also playing an important role in their math foundations.
