My Students

Our junior high math club is made up of students in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. They are a great group of students who either love math or know they can get better at math with practice and hard work. We participate in math competitions, play math games, create videos that explain how to solve challenging problems, do coding and robotics activities, and manage a library of take-home mathematics kits for elementary students.

I really enjoy working with my math club students because of their dedication, persistence, and willingness to help other students.

We are a small K-12 school, so all of the students are very involved in many activities. I am always amazed at how many of these busy children are willing to give up their time to participate in math club. In a small school, it can be hard to address the needs of all students. Math club provides some much-needed support for students that struggle in math by helping them gain confidence, reinforce skills they have learned, and teach them new concepts in a very non-threatening and fun environment. It also provides advanced students the chance to explore math and extend their learning.

My Project

My math club students have developed several take-home mathematics kits for elementary students in grades K-5 as a service-learning opportunity. Each kit is checked out to a student on Friday to take home and enjoy over the weekend. The kits are returned by Wednesday the following week to be cleaned and restocked by the math club students on Thursday. Then they are ready to be checked out by a new student. The math kits have been extremely popular among students in all of the grades, and students often have to wait several months before they receive a kit.

The books included in this project will be included in additional math kits or provide more activities to make additional kits.

This would lessen the wait time as well as allow us to offer a wider variety of kits available. The feedback forms from our returned kits have indicated that students and parents have enjoyed the activities that connect mathematics to other disciplines (such as finance or art) or the real world the most, so many of the books were chosen with this in mind. The remainder of the books were chosen because the math club students thought the students receiving the math kits would enjoy them.
