My Students

Remember the lecturing of your high school math class and math teachers? What if you could go back and have hands-on and interactive math lessons? Would it have made math more enjoyable for you? In my classroom, I try to help my students learn to enjoy and apply math by having a hands-on approach.

I have approximately 25 students in each of my three classes.

I teach in a suburban school. However, there are still many students living in poverty. The three classes I teach are Algebra 1, Geometry, and Honors Pre-Calculus. All of my students would benefit from hands-on learning because it helps them engage in math and truly see how each mathematical concept relates to the real world. Manipulatives also help them grasp abstract concepts better.

My Project

With the expo markers, white boards, poster boards and sharpies, students will be able to display their work in their own way. These items will also give me a chance to provide instant feedback and check for understanding of various concepts. With the construction paper, origami paper, compasses, graph paper, high lighters, markers, glue, patty paper and colored pencils, students will be able to preform constructions of different mathematical concepts, such as reflections, rotations, translations, making shapes, and making presentations on concepts. With the organizers and books, our classroom will stay organized and updated on new ways of approaching mathematics. The buzzers will also allow us to play group games to test our knowledge and review for tests. The various shape manipulatives will allow my students to visibly see and feel various shapes and their nets.

The donations to this project will allow my classroom to have the materials needed for every student to have hands-on experiences.

Hands-on learning can deepen student understanding of concepts and make what we are learning more applicable for them. It will also improve my classroom by allowing me to have the resources to stay updated on new approaches to teaching.
