Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are in fifth grade at a high need school. They are part of a unique Bilingual classroom setting in which they learn in English and in Spanish. Students receive all content in both languages. The bilingual program supports my students needs because they are all English Learners.

All my students are English Learners. Language is a huge barrier for my students. As a result, I have observed that my students get very involved and learn the most with hands on math activities. My students enjoy learning math when they have an opportunity to do it in centers and touch or see the math. Unfortunately, my school does not have the materials needed to cater to my students special needs. In addition, the majority of my students are struggling with the 5th grade material and are very below grade level. They get easily frustrated with math because it is so abstract. However, when math becomes hands-on, I am able to get all my students involved and excited to learn. A lack of money to buy appropriate supplies should not be the barrier for my students success in math.

The supplies I am requesting will allow me to make every math lesson hands on. Students will be able to learn how to add and subtract decimals bu using the money and playing a shopping game with their peers. They will be able to learn equivalent fractions and how to compare fractions by being able to see with the fraction manipulatives that 1/8 of a circle is smaller than 1/4 of the same circle. The abstract problems of rolling dice and understanding probability will be made concrete thanks to the dice manipulatives that will allow my students to understand probability by doing. The other resources will allow students to constantly practice their math facts. Many of my students do now know their math facts and this is their barrier for completing all other math. These resources will make it fun and easy to practice their math skills everyday. The math center activities will then allow students to apply their knowledge independently and feel proud of themselves because they can complete math problems by themselves.

These resources in my classroom will change students' attitudes about math. They will approach all math problems with the new idea that it is fun, easy, and possible with the help of math manipulatives. Further, my students will feel inspired to learn their math facts.
