Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Middle school is such an unbearably hard time for so many. My goal in teaching middle school is to make it a little less difficult while giving my students the resources they need to succeed. I teach at a Title 1 school, which means that the majority of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch.

When home life is turbulent, I want my classroom to be a place where students are able to relax and feel at home.

Our school provides food boxes and resources to any families in need, and we pride ourselves on taking care of our own community. Many of our students still enjoy their teachers and coming to school and we feel like it's our job to set them up for success to continue to enjoy learning as they move onto high school. So many of our students have been through so much, we want school to be a safe place for them.

My Project

Math is always a polarizing subject, and one that people either love or hate. Since supporting my ELL students in math, I noticed that it was one subject that they often excelled in because while the words may be different, the actual steps to do the problem are same no matter what the language. I noticed that my ELLs are really struggling in the general education math set up and so I discussed with my administration the possibility of me doing a math class for just my ELL students, both 7th and 8th grade, so they have better access to the information.

My ELL students respond well to research backed tools like Doodle Notes & Interactive Notebooks to grasp both their new vocabulary and the mathematical concepts.

Three of the items on my Donors Choose are Math Interactive Notebook templates, in which the students can hands on interact with their math to understand the concepts. The TPT gift card is so I can buy a master set of Doodle Notes, which are proven to help ELL students understand concepts in a way regular notes do not. These resources will allow me to teach a combination math class of 7th and 8th graders during the day in a fun and interactive way. My students can (and will) use these items for both of their years with me and will help them grow their English skills as well as their Math skills.
