Making Math Alive Using Counting Collections

Help me give my students materials for counting collection. The bins will help my students make any collection of objects into a counting collections activity. This activity will be used for all students from kindergarten to fifth grade.

My Students

The students of my school are students in different grade levels (transitional kindergarten, kindergarten all the way to fifth grade). This also includes all students with disabilities (autism, developmental delays, learning, and behavioral challenges). These students are students socio-economically disadvantaged students as they all are eligible to the free lunch program.

My role as one of the teachers and instructional leaders in this school is to ensure that each student's unique academic, linguistic, emotional, social, and sensory needs are met through varied activities using best practices in teaching.

My Project

I have collected many objects from math manipulatives to everyday household objects. Students will be sorting these objects using the bins that I have requested.

Math concepts assessed and taught in these activities are the following: one-to-one correspondence, cardinality, conservation, subitizing, estimating, place value, connecting a count to a numeral, skip counting, addition, subtraction

multiplicative thinking, division, flexible counting strategies, fractions, and decimals.

These activities also enable students to collaborate, use their critical thinking, use creativity and communicate their ideas to their group members. This experience with counting lays the foundation for understanding of the base-ten system and operating on numbers.
