This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine how frustrating it is for a teacher trying to teach a Math lesson without having any technology, in a technological world, where most resources for math including the textbooks are online? This is the challenge facing the teachers and impacting student learning in my school.

Our school is located in Miami, Florida, where the vast majority of students are Spanish speakers (ESOL).

Most of their families have recently come from Central America and have a very low socio-economic background. Also, the school has a very large population of students with various learning disabilities (ESE). Both of these groups comprise the majority of students in my school and because of this, they would especially benefit from having visual aids in front of them as they are being taught their daily math lesson. My school is especially challenged because since it was built in 1925, the building is very old and has hardly had any major changes. We currently have no WI-Fi, no Smartboards in the classrooms, very few computers in the classrooms and only a few projectors which we have gotten recently, thanks to the generosity of donors.

My Project

My challenge this year is that, as the math coach for the entire school (K-5), my job entails going into the classrooms and modeling math lessons for the students. A small, portable laptop would enable me to connect it to our projector in order to project the textbook page onto the classroom's whiteboards in order to teach the math lessons more effectively. All students would be able to see the actual lesson page from the book, magnified on the board, allowing a more visual and colorful learning experience. Also, students would be able to interact with the material by coming to the board and solving the problems. Being able to see the page projected and magnified would help make abstract concepts easier to understand and thus captivate their attention keeping them engaged and focused. Our ESOL and ESE students would be better able to comprehend the lessons because of all the visual aids. Additionally, it would allow me to show instructional videos and clips thus infusing technology.

Donations to this project will improve all of the classrooms in my school.
