My Students

A hard thing for a teacher to do is find some kind of springboard that they can use to spark classroom discussions when teaching reading and writing. One thing I have found that works wonders is teaching with mentor text. Children are inspired by people they look up to like authors.

I have a classroom full of beginner Kindergarten readers.

These students are really thrilled to be in school and now is the time to keep them thrilled about learning. We are a title 1 school in which many of our students are on free or reduced lunch and come from families that cannot afford the daily things that we take for granted like a "new book."

My Project

I am requesting a library full of mentor text to help teach reading and writing strategies to my class. WHAT CHILD DOESN'T USE THEIR IMAGINATION AND CREATIVITY? With using these books as mentor texts, my students will see the possibilities of learning. They will make connections with what the authors wrote, with what the illustrators drew and they will want to immolate those authors when writing stories of their own or discussing the books with their partners. Some of the great resources I have requested are Big Books (like The Napping House and Brown Bear, Brown Bear) to use during whole group reading. I have also requested some great books from some inspiring authors. These books will be used to teach strategies and students will have a front row seat to learning. Some of my favorite authors I have requested books from are: Mo Willems, Robert Munsch, Tod Parr, Eric Carle and so many more. I also am requesting a Big Book rack to store and keep our books visible and organized.

Using mentor text books provides a model that will help students grow as writers and readers.

They help stimulate creativity and create interest to build reading stamina. Mentor text can also be used to connect reading strategies to author craft and provide opportunities for students to learn about cultural differences and many life lessons. The materials and books I am requesting will really enrich our classroom and inspire my students.
