Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How does imagery work in a piece of literature? What does it actually look like? What effect does it have on the text overall? These are some of the questions I would like my students to explore in our English class.

I teach at a Title I school in Manhattan in which most students don't get to take an art class until 12th grade.

My students, mostly Hispanic and African-American, are smart, creative, and eager to learn, as long as the learning entertains and engages them. In my 18 years of teaching, I've found that students produce some of their best work when they are allowed to be creative and show what they know. The irony is that they lack the supplies to create this work. This is what I would like to change.

My Project

For this project, I am requesting cans of Play-Doh and assorted tools, along with plastic plates and Sharpies, for students to use to help them connect to the imagery presented in a work of literature. When we read Jonathan Edwards' famous sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," for example, students will identify pieces of imagery within the text. To help them grasp what is being suggested and how the imagery functions in the text overall, students will work with a partner to create a 3D image of an example of imagery using Play-Doh. They will construct their image on a plastic plate, using the Sharpies to label the plate with the related text and its implications.

After a year of learning at home, glued to a computer, it is my goal to make class fun and engaging when we return in September.

By thinking outside of the box and creating opportunities for all learners, we can make this happen!
