When I was a young student I remember what it was like to mold and shape clay to make something. I remember the excitement I felt when I was able to make an animal or form the shape of a human body. I love art and this was a major accomplishment for me. I want my students to have this experience.
My students are excited when they come to me for visual art.
They are so smart and creative and eager to make art. They like to draw and paint all kinds of things. They are eager to try new projects and experiment with different materials and colors. They tell me that art is their favorite subject and quite a few want to be an artist when they grow up. Their enthusiasum is infectious and they take pride in all of the art projects they create. Our school is located in a poor area of New York and we are underfunded. My students try hard and they are determined to do well in all of their subjects. They are polite and eager to learn about the world and other people. I am proud of my students because they are so determined to succeed in everything they do.
My Project
The material I selected does not require special equipment to use. This clay will air dry and firing in a kiln or a oven is not required. The clay is also adaptable for all ages and is non-toxic so that I will not have to worry about safety issues. I plan to use this material to teach lessons on how to create different things with clay. Each grade will have a different lesson and work on a different project. Lower grades will study animal life forms and create different animals and how they live. This will connect to their science lessons. Upper grades will study human life form and will be able to create human life forms in different positions. I should be able to extend some classroom lessons by studying different cultures and making bowls and other utensils and decorate items according to the culture the students studied. This will be an advantage for our student body to have this experience and will make learning even more exciting and encouraging students to learn more.
I believe that all students should have an opportunity to experience all facets of art that is age appropriate and that will enhance their learning experience by connecting to their academic curriculum.
I want all students to have a positive learning experience and this project will definately make students want to learn more. Years from now they will look back and remember how they enjoyed learning because they had the oppportuity to connect the lesson with visual art. Our students deserve it.
