My Students

Education is not solely based on learning material and being tested on it. Students need the practical life skills to be productive members of society. My students need these practical life materials to not only practice learned material but to learn a new skill for life.

My students attend a Montessori Charter School in Pennsylvania.

The majority of my students come from a low socio-economic background so they do not have all the resources available to them that they need. They are a very energetic group of 1st-3rd graders who often crave peaceful, quiet activities as they do not always experience this in their home lives. These sewing materials will allow them to practice valuable skills while reviewing learning material in a creative way.

My Project

The sewing materials I requested will give my students an opportunity to practice a life skill while reviewing learned material. With the sewing materials, students will be able to make quilts and designs to practice material learned in the classroom such as: geometric shapes, number and letter recognition, plants, animals, constellations, and geography. With the materials, they will be able to be able to work on peaceful projects that will naturally teach them to be more focused and detail-oriented.

The Montessori method of teaching highlights the importance of tactile learning.

It is proven that students retain information better when it is taught and practiced through hands-on learning. These materials would be a great extension to the curriculum and allow the students to be engaged in a project that is creative and allows for longer retention.
