My Students

I LOVE you already just for taking time to read this! I am a first year teacher, and quickly learning how fast your paycheck goes right back into your students. (Especially, when you see the love these students need every day.) We are over halfway through the school year and my students passion and learning growth is more than I could've ever imagined!

These students are right around the corner from the “Happiest Place on Earth,” but they live in a very low income, high poverty area which everyday going home to is not the happiest.

When my students come to school they are excited because they are given the supplies they need and opportunities that at home they may not have. They also look forward to school, because for many, it might be the only time they get to eat during the day. Many of these children are performing below grade level and need to make learning gains that will put them back to the grade level they should be performing at. Our project will continue to help my students make learning gains, reading skills, and be educated about our world.

My Project

Paper, paper, paper… NO MORE! These kids need a break! We are 4th and 5th grade teachers in need of some quality literature to help teach reading skills to our students. We believe in kids being hands-on with stories they are interested in. We will be using these texts with powerful messages to teach multiple skills (which will align with our state standards) including point of view, summary, context clues, theme, inference, character traits, text structure and more!

We don’t want our classrooms to just read and answer questions, they need to connect to the lesson.

Using these books will give our current and future students memorable experiences on lessons which they don’t even realize they are learning. We are helping these children become kind, knowledgeable, productive members of society. Susan Sarandon said “When you start to develop your powers of empathy and IMAGINATION, the whole world opens up to you.” It’s got to be taught and developed, we believe these books will start to do just that. These children love to learn about our history and put themselves in someone else’s shoes. The powerful messages, illustrations, and rich vocabulary will give our students the knowledge and skills they need for years to come.

Multiple copies of these books will allow the students to use what they have been taught and work together to improve their learning. Collaboration using real world experience and getting results, what more could we want?!
