This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The children who walk through our school's doors each day are not just students; they are super readers, powerful writers and mathematicians in the making. I work in the Bronx area. It is a new school that doesn’t have much funding. The majority of our families live below the poverty line, are immigrants, with their own difficult situations and obstacles to over come. That, however, doesn’t change the fact that our new neighborhood school isn’t just a school.

It’s a community where we help each other instill good citizen behaviors in our students and give them a love for learning.

Teachers give up time, stay late and provide parents with workshops in literacy to make reading fun for children. We are always there for our families and students. We have high expectations for them. We want our students to learn in a fun, positive and exciting environment. We want our school to be a place where you want to be, not have to be. My students are eager to learn and succeed. I hope to keep that love for learning growing inside my students.

My Project

My students need these materials to reinforce their learning. Half of the items in the cart are CD-ROM's that hold fun, interactive games that keep children's attention while allowing them to practice the skills being presented to them. I strongly believe that these games and materials will give my students a chance to independently reinforce the concepts they're taught. This is the first year that I am responsible for teaching all the English as a New Language (ENL) students and utilizing these cards gives them a visual representation of what the words are. On the back of each card, the word is translated into 13 different languages and will be useful for a wide array of students from varying language backgrounds. Aside from broadening their vocabulary, the other items will also assist them with their writing skills. They will learn how to put a story, or a non-fiction event, in sequential order. Once the story is presented to them in a visual form, they then have the opportunity to say it out loud and then write about it. They will learn how to use transitional words, develop topic sentence/ introductory paragraphs, and how to add more details to their work. This will assist the students with their writing skills, which will in turn transfer to their writing in the classroom.

All the materials in the cart are to support children and give them opportunities to have independent time to practice their skill and succeed in their academic pursuits.
