My Students

I'm a special education teacher at a high poverty school and work with 1st, 3rd, and 4th grade students. I work with them during science and social studies, but we're working especially hard on foundational math, reading, and writing skills.

My students are sweet, funny, hard-working kids who need a little more time and repetition to make things stick.

Many of them have experienced some real hardships, but they make me laugh every day, and it's really a joy to work with them.

My Project

My students are focusing on mastering important math and literacy skills that they'll need in order to make future learning easier. They're all excited to learn and capable of doing so, but the repetition can definitely get tiring for all of us. I try to find ways to change things up so that we're moving, singing, jumping, and playing, and not just sitting in our desks doing the same thing over and over. Like many kids their age, they especially love when we get to use technology in the classroom.

Osmo will give us another way to make learning a little more fun and hands-on.

Osmo mixes hands-on manipulatives with an iPad and camera. There are a few different game sets that come with the kits we're buying, including Numbers and Words. Numbers involves manipulating number tiles and dice tiles and will let my students practice making numbers. Building number fluency is really important for them. One of the things I love about the Numbers game is that there's more than one correct way to create a number. It encourages flexible thinking and the use of different strategies. Words lets students use letter tiles to spell out the pictures they see on the iPad screen. This will provide my students with phonics practice among other things. Another cool thing about the Words game is that I have the option of uploading my own images which can be a great way for us to practice writing and recognizing important science and social studies vocabulary. The mixture of tactile objects, visuals, and technology is very powerful for my students who all learn in different ways.
