Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember being in school dreaming about summer vacation because you were bored to tears?! Well, I don't want that for my students. I teach second grade and I want my students to learn from an early age that learning/school can be fun so they will be excited to come to class. Art can help!

I work in NYC in a low income area.

The school is a public school that services a lot of special needs kids. I teach in a classroom with students who are typically developing, as well as students who have been diagnosed as high functioning autistic. Many of my students come from single parent homes or even foster care. All of this information is important to know in order to fully understand the various challenges they are faced with. Despite all of this, my students are amazing children. They are bright, funny, kind, and caring. I spend much of my day laughing and smiling with them as we learn. I try to incorporate art into the curriculum as a motivator and learning tool. My students know that after some hard work they will be able to create some kind of art to enhance the topic we are studying. However, our supplies are dwindling. Our markers, glue, and paint are drying out, our crayons are broken. We desperately need new supplies so I can continue the amazing work we are doing.

My Project

Learning must be fun and motivating. With every unit of curriculum, I try to incorporate a cumulative activity or project. Often that activity revolves around art. For example, in social studies we are learning about maps and geography, so for the final project the students will be creating a maps of the classroom out of clay. They learned that in ancient times that is how maps were made. In math we have spent this unit creating a "t-shirt factory". The students have had to use their knowledge of place value, addition and subtraction to calculate inventory, sales and organization. For the final project, they are designing their own t-shirts with special 3D fabric paint. In literacy, the upcoming unit is fairy tales. They will be reading different versions of classic fairy tales and then writing their own fairy tales. As the cumulative project, I plan to have them create puppets of their characters and put on a puppet show for their families. Please help me replace art supplies!

I try very hard every day to make sure that my students are learning.

I also want them to become lifelong learners. In order to make sure that happens, I must show them that learning can be fun and exciting. The art supplies I am requesting will help me create the fun learning environment that my students need, want and deserve.
