Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Please, please, help me. I teach third grade in a K-5 building. Our student population is -89% on free or reduced lunch, -38% are limited English proficient, -28% mobility rate. Our school was built in the early 70's with an "open classroom" concept. We have undergone two phases of remodeling to put in walls; however, neither time included new electrical wiring. We are limited to the number of computers our system will withstand. Why I desperately need an LCD projector: -Very soon, my students will be taking their annual Reading assessment on the computer. As their teacher, I must show them how to do this. Currently they are accustomed to pencil and paper tasks. Although my students will have the knowledge to pass their tests, if they don't have the test taking skills, they will be unable to demonstrate that knowledge. The website childrensbookonline.com has full color books available that will help me, but I cannot do direct, whole class instruction using a desktop computer with 20 children trying to crowd around and see the screen. -All of my students need access to the multitude of interactive programs on the Internet and on commercial CDs. I use the computer program Oregon Trail during the first six weeks of school. Currently all 20 of us have to find time to squeeze behind the computer to learn our curriculum. The site graves.k12.ky.us/PowerPoint's/elementary/ has dozens of premade power point programs for all levels that I could also use. -There are nine intelligences by which children learn. The typical classroom addresses two of those. The children who learn musically, kinesthetically, or spatially are the ones who struggle to make sense of traditional paper and pencil activities. A projector would help fill in the gap for those students who learn through a different approach. The website http://suzyred.com/music.html has dozens of educational songs to teach all subject areas. -A projector would enliven my classroom teaching and help my students with attention deficits, my English as a Second Language learners, and my Gifted and Talented students who are easily bored and need to be challenged. -To help our students be successful and meet the requirements for No Child Left Behind, we begin after school tutoring in October. If students were engaged in the learning process during the school day, perhaps fewer would need after school and Saturday tutorials. I have a Master's degree in Technology in Education. I know how to get the maximum usage out of a projector and will use it for much more than a lecture presentation. My students will have direct, hands on experiences with its capabilities on a daily basis. Students will be eager to come to school and participate in their education.
