My Students

Have you ever been expected to participate in a discussion or activity when the topic or concept was not visible to you? A document camera will give all students the opportunity to view any still or moving object by enlarging and projecting the object on the wall.

My students attend an urban, low-income high school in Philadelphia.

They all receive special education services and are grouped together in learning support classes. Given budget cuts and limited resources, my class sizes are as large as 21 students. My students want to feel successful in high school and take the same classes as their peers. Understanding content becomes challenging given that the typical student is on a 3rd grade reading level. As a result, many of my students do not feel confident in their academic abilities. To escape this, they socialize or act as if they do not care about their academic work. What better way to build self-esteem and classroom community than by projecting student work on the wall to learn from, praise, and discuss?

My Project

I have an InFocus projector to transmit the images from my teacher computer, but I need a document camera to visually present materials from other sources. This will enhance student learning by projecting both student work and hard copy work, as students do not have their own textbooks. A document camera will help build excitement for learning as students can share their answers, solutions, and projects for the entire class to see. It will also allow me to teach with the exact paper or workbook page my students are working on projected on the board. The students will see what they are working on under the camera, and they can see me write on the page live, as I do it! That way, I can show my students how I do something, like a division problem, and lead them directly through the process. Students will also love to come up and show how they solved the problem under the document camera.

As 11th grade students receiving Special Education services, many of them have given up on learning.

They need to feel engaged and empowered in the classroom. With a document camera, my students will be able to see exactly how to complete academic assignments through my own modeling, show the class how they've solved a problem, and discuss each other's work. A document camera will help my students take pride in their own work and that of their classmates.
