My Students

When documents cameras were introduced to our school, I insisted that it would be impossible to implement them in my kindergarten classroom.

A room filled with 32 little bodies, constantly on the move made it very difficult to envision a set up that would actually work. Since the document camera would require the use of a projector, I could simply not picture any possible location in my classroom that could accommodate a table, projector and cables without getting in the way of these active, young learners. Two years ago I was fortunate enough to have a flat screen donated to my classroom. It has completely changed my teaching! I am now able to connect my document camera directly to the television, as well as my laptop. The television is mounted in a central location that is visible by all students and there are no tables and cables in the way!

My Project

My students now can watch me model lessons and can follow along step by step. The fact that they can see me modeling the activities on the very same paper they are working on has improved their skills immeasurably. Penmanship has improved, math skills have increased, and listening skills have been fine tuned. Additionally, since I am able to connect to my laptop, I am able to access instructional videos through Discovery Learning which have helped motivate my students and allowed them improved access to this resource. I have also purchased a tool that allows me to connect my iPad to the television. By doing so, I am able to model use of educational apps, and drawing programs such as Pixie.

I feel very fortunate to have stumbled upon this amazing tool through a generous donation.

However, as time passes, and technology continues to improve, I am discovering that the television I am currently using is not keeping up. The screen, though a definite improvement from nothing at all, is proving to be a bit small and the picture quality a bit challenging for all my students to see. My students need a large screen TV. Funding of this grant will keep my classroom up to date, and allow all students universal access.
