My Students

What would it be like to not only learn about money, but to play with it in a classroom store? Or to get to play with a scale to learn about measurement? Math is much more meaningful when it is applied to the real world, but our classroom is missing some of the key ingredients to make this happen.

My students are creative, lively, curious third graders in our newly opened charter school.

Although they are considered "low income" and "high needs" they make up for what they don't have materially with their strong motivation and drive to learn. Third graders are full of questions about the world and my students are no exception! Their favorite part of the day is when we do centers and they get to work in small groups to problem solve and practice what they have been learning while I work with small groups to make sure every student is learning as much as possible. Our classroom is never dull, and we use whatever resources we can to make learning meaningful, engaging, and as collaborative as possible.

My Project

The resources in this grant would give these hard working students a chance to practice their math skills in hands-on ways. The different materials will be used in student-driven centers. At the store, students will have cash registers, play money, and shopping baskets to take turns buying food items and keeping track of their change. In the measurement center students will get to practice using a scale, rulers, and tape measures to find the exact size of various materials. The math listening center will guide students through extra practice on the math skills they struggle with most. Meanwhile, while the students are working, the other manipulatives will be used at the teacher-directed station as students get the much needed individual attention they need.

The news reports often tell the story of schools in the United States lagging behind schools in other countries in the areas of math and science.

My class is working every day to show that we can beat the odds and have a classroom full of students who love to learn math, and who are good at showing that on any national test. If this grant gets funded we will be even closer to this goal.
