Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At the end of my first day of school, I had the students write down what they wanted me know (I wish my teacher knew...). Many expressed negative feelings about learning and school. Their responses inspired me to write another project. They need to be challenged, motivated and inspired to create and learn.

They loved our first day STEM challenge and I wanted to continue that excitement throughout the year.

I saw them learning how to work as a team, develop communication skills that foster collaboration and expand their critical thinking skills.

After our Back to School group challenge, I noticed smiles and a positive energy filled the classroom. For the past few years, my colleagues and I have begun incorporating STEAM challenges into our lesson plans and we have seen the excitement and the power that these challenges have on students. I want to "up" my STEM opportunities this year. STEAM activities give students the ability to persevere and develop problem solving skills while fostering collaboration and teamwork is priceless.

My Project

The supplies will give my students the opportunity to create, build and invent designs to create paper circuits and/or a board game. The card stock paper, lights and copper foil tape will give them creative power to design, test and and learn the ins and outs of electrical circuits. This activity will provide my students with a hands-on understanding of electrical circuits.

Making paper circuits will fuel their engagement, creativity and curiosity while building problem solving skills.

After an introduction to circuits, I will encourage them create and design a card. We will collaborate and problem solve to rethink ideas. I want to teach that failure is a part of the learning process and build their perseverance to create, make and "think like an engineer".

I am excited to present this hands-on activity that will give my students the how and why a concept works.
