Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students attend this Title I school in grades 1 through 5. We have general education, bilingual, and dual-language (English/Spanish) classes available to them. The majority of them (98%) come from economically disadvantaged families; as such, they may not have the opportunities to get their hands on various books and projects in order to spur their imagination.

Despite the circumstantial challenges placed on the students, they were able to meet and even exceed the state standard on the STAAR testing.

Our students are capable, bright, and the future of this country.

My Project

Our school has begun a new program called Genius Hour, during which all students participate in a passion of their choice. My hosted event is called Maker Madness, and encourages students to make and create whatever they desire. Giving them various tools to create will encourage problem-solving, collaboration, and "grit" as they work through various challenges.

Each material has been carefully selected to fulfill our school's emphasis of STEM education while remaining exciting and interesting to our little geniuses.

The mazes and games will encourage friendly competition, problem-solving, and grit as they work through the challenges. LEGOs allow freedom of expression and bring about smiles like no other toy I've seen. We also will do "LEGO challenges" with teams in which, for example, each team will have to create an upside down house, or a structure from what they are learning in science. Magnetic tiles also teach children about physics as they work to create structures that are stable (sometimes I pretend I am a tornado to "test" their buildings--they love it!). Consumables such as paper, stickers, and so on will be used to encourage a no-tech approach to creation, such as one of our "Makers With a Cause" projects to create cards for children living in hospitals.
