Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is composed of special education students, some of whom are also English Language Learners. All of my 3rd and 4th grade students are reading between a Kindergarten and 2nd grade level, and my fear is that if I am not able to support their needs this year they will only fall further behind.Unfortunately not only is their reading lagging behind their peers but their knowledge of the world around them. We provide field trips for real-life learning, but the ability to build prior knowledge before the trips as well as to teach students how they can learn through books is so significant. I want my students to have all the opportunities I grew up with.

All of my students receive free lunch and many are from single parent homes, and most come to school with no supplies and struggle every day.

They come from hard working families, however many are below the standard reading level for their grade based on New York State Standards. This puts them at a distinct disadvantage, as compared to those who are fortunate enough to have been raised in a home where parents have provided the initial steps towards literacy.

My Project

Fortunately for my class there are a maximum of twelve students, and although they present with the highest needs, I believe with the correct resources I will be able to target their deficits and inspire life-long readers. I truly want to help them to become literate members of society. These books not only provide extra resources for them to practice their reading skills but also open a world of learning to them.

Many students in my class have limited life experiences and these books open up the door for them to grow their curiosity.

Once the classroom has received books the lives of the students will be majorly impacted. These books will provide me the ability to continue working in small groups to target reading skills that students need to focus on as well as motivate them on interesting topics in environmental sciences.
