My Students

I teach at a special education center in the Los Angeles area, and work with students who have multiple, severe disabilities. My students face significant physical, and cognitive disabilities that make distance learning very difficult. I want to give them some options for hands-on learning that I can send home with them, so that even if their attention span is low staring at a screen while we do a Zoom lesson, they can access learning with hands-on manipulatives and visuals (which is more familiar to them in the classroom). While it will still not be the same as learning on campus and in person, I think this will make a huge difference in my students' educational experience during remote learning.

My Project

My students learn best with hands on activities and typically need a lot of supports - physical, communication, positioning, and verbal prompting are a part of their normal school day; without assistance, accessing our curriculum is extremely difficult, if not impossible, for my class. Now that we are moving to an online only, distance learning format for our return to school this fall, my moderate-severe special education students face a great deal of challenges - staring at the screen while I teach from their computer screens is not meaningful to them. The students will be able to interact with an manipulate these materials will allow them to continue to experience school with hands-on learning, and I will be able to make our lessons much more interactive and engaging through the use of interactive digital activities and storyboard puppets.
