Making Dance Memorable & Meaningful

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

I currently work in Newark as a dance teacher. Being that this is a low-income, urban district, it is extremely difficult to get funding for our students, especially in the visual & performing arts department. My students and I currently dance on concrete flooring which is extremely dangerous and limits the amount of material and dance genres that I expose to my students. I have a lot of students with potential, but they are limited in their abilities due to this.

When dancing, it is extremely important to feel confident, comfortable, and have fun while doing so!

That is why I think getting the lights for my classroom will be a great addition because it will allow my students to feel different moods and energies while dancing. It also makes it a fun and safe environment for those shy students who are not the most confident yet in dancing.

Having tape would assist my students with knowing where their spots are and staying in line with one another. A lot of my students are first time dancers and it is hard for them to conceptualize the idea of formations and staying in a specific spot when needed. The tape will serve as an extremely helpful resource to them!
