Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Newspapers are filled with negative stories, inappropriate photos and sometimes explicit language, which cannot be used in the classroom. I used to use the newspaper in the classroom, but I have found it to be less desirable than ever.

My students are from all parts of the world.

Mostly, they are come from India, China, Korea, South America and Africa. They are kind, inquisitive youngsters who have a thirst for learning. They enjoy school and strive to do their best everyday. Our school is large, holding 1500 students from K-5, and our classes are over-crowded with up to 34 kids in a class. Most of the families are low-income, or on state aid. The standards are set high from the principal and teachers, and for most of the children, they are up for the challenge. Our school, like many others, lost funding for many of the programs that were offered in the past to help raise student achievement.

My Project

My students need more exposure to high-interest nonfiction texts; "Weekly Reader" and "Around the World" teach many useful reading skills, while focusing on current events. I request these classroom magazines so I can teach current events and nonfiction in a fun and safe way. These magazines are high-interest and kid-friendly.

"Each issue brings the news to life with current events stories written at a variety of reading levels.

Exciting articles, news, info-graphics, colorful maps, graphs, charts, and more, build reading comprehension — and motivate students to read." - Weekly Reader It will be wonderful to bring current events back to my classroom. I know the students will love reading these magazines and enjoy the lessons from them. It will be a wonderful way to increase their nonfiction reading skills and comprehension.
