Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.

A lot of our students and families are still displaced from Hurricane Harvey as they rebuild their lives.

Hurricane Harvey destroyed most of their homes in our immediate area. My school is considered high poverty and many of our students do not have technology at home. Most of our students are receiving free lunch. The majority of our students are Spanish speakers and receiving English as a New Language services. Our students have different learning needs that impact learning. They are either visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learners. They learn best with the use of pictures, visual aids, text, watching video clips, performing hands-on activities and by modeling the lesson to complete certain tasks.

Despite all of the challenges that our students are facing, they are always eager and ready to learn. They are excited to know what is in store for them each time they step inside my classroom doors.

My Project

My students are in desperate need of technology that was lost in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. Many of my students have lost everything that they owned, including a way to connect through technology. What I've realized is that students need to have the actual tool and first-hand experience in order to succeed with operating it and deal effectively with project-based learning. I currently have only two desktops computers in class with over 75 second graders that I teach within one day. The need for real-world connections through learning is a necessity. Students will be able to work on their own at a pace that they can manage. These tablets will cater to their untapped potential. Given the chance to have these tablets in hand would not only benefit them but this would be a means for knowledge sharing among the students as a whole. I would like to request a set of four iPads. This will be shared by all the classes under my tutelage benefiting 75 students. Your donation to this great endeavor is truly appreciated! Thank you very much!
