My Students

My students are special needs children between the ages of 3 and 5 years old. The students attend the preschool classes 2 times a week for 2 1/2 hours each session. They are in a setting where there are also typically developing peers in the classroom who can provide them with models of good language and social skills. During class, I have the opportunity to work with the special needs children as a speech therapist and help them develop their communication skills.

These children, like all children, desperately want to communicate with those around them and make their voices heard.

They are eager to work on the tasks that I give them because they know that it is helping them to better communicate with others.

My Project

My students have a variety of communication needs. Some students are minimally verbal and so they need assistance to develop basic receptive and expressive vocabulary; even being able to communicate with single words is an enormous achievement for these children. Some students are verbal but lack the finer points of being able to produce clear and understandable sentences; they need help to produce all the words necessary to make their meaning clear to those around them. Some students have excellent vocabularies and language skills but are unable to pronounce their words appropriately; this impacts their ability to be understood and can also have an impact on their abilities to learn to read and write later on. All of these children need speech therapy services, but they need to be delivered in a variety of different ways in order to meet their individual needs.

The items I hope to receive with this grant will provide an enormous variety of different communicative skill sets to target with my students.

Some of them will provide basic vocabulary targets for minimally verbal children. Some will allow children to increase the length and complexity of the sentences they can produce and understand. Some will help children develop a better knowledge of speech sounds and how to distinguish them so that they can pronounce words more clearly and develop foundational skills necessary for reading and writing. I am beyond excited to be able to show these children the wonders of communication through the different games and activities provided in these items!
