My Students

Can you imagine wanting something and having absolutly no way to communicate that to your teacher or parents? My students deal with this situation everyday!

My class is a special needs class in a public school in Florida.

All of my students have profound mental handicaps and are severely and medically fragile. Many of my students are visually and/or hearing impaired. None of them can talk or walk and they need help with the smallest of activities.

My Project

I am asking for six different types of communication devices and switch activated toys. Students with profound disabilities need to understand that if they activate a switch toy then an action will take place. You may think simple cause and effect, but to them it is communication. Once they master the cause and effect of a toy they can begin to understand that by using a communication device they can communicate their wants and needs.

Have you ever tried to get something you need without using your voice or writing it down?

It is a very difficult task. My students go through this every day. They cry or whine and we must guess what is wrong. These communication devices will allow them to tell us what they need.
