My students need a pottery tool kit, clay and glazes to create clay musical instruments. I am doing a collaborative project with dance and ceramic students.

High school art students will make ceramic musical instruments/sound sculptures. Students will collaborate to create a recording of the combined sounds and then the dance students will choreograph a modern dance to the sound art. This will be performed on stage using a Hubble photograph as a backdrop.
The students are art students attending a magnet high school in Florida.
The school is rated as an "A" school even though it is a title one school with a majority of students on free and reduced lunch. The art students often have to buy their own supplies or fundraise. Every year they hold a public auction to raise money for supplies.
My Project
The funds will be used to provide clay, glazes and tools for a collaborative project. Students will make musical instrument out of clay and will record the sounds to make sound art. They will study artists such as Brian Ransom who is a specialist at making clay instruments.
The music from their own instruments will be recorded and dance students will choreograph a modern dance to be performed on stage in a public venue. The scientist that supervises the Hubble space telescope will be present at the event and several of the photographs from the Hubble will be projected as backdrops to create an atmoshphere for the modern dance.
The event will be filmed and presented on May 19th in the school's theatre. The public and faculty will be invited.
Without the supplies students will not be able to make the clay instruments and collaborate with the dance students or participate in the Hubble space event.
This is a once in a life time event with a chance to meet the NASA scientist in person. The project is a way to get students to think about space exploration and to experience the collaboration of music, dance, visual art and photography.
