Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a high-needs high school in New York City. Our school focuses on developing critical thinkers who can express their understanding through projects and defending their work through oral presentations. Most of my students work hard at school, get to school by public transit, then after school, work, take care of their family, or do sports, theater, or college prep.

My students ask curious questions and learn best through hands-on science explorations and involving their communities.

They build on their learning, have needs, and come to school to learn chemistry, neuroscience, computer science, math, and AP English. They ask questions and are curious - even about cacti and water evaporation and batteries and space!

My Project

Students are studying the overarching concept of how the structure of a material tells us how that material may behave. By drawing out molecules on the tables using the chalk markers, students will have the opportunity to color code, use large print, and take ownership for determining how molecules look. In addition, the chalk markers help students take low-stress risks when learning new topics by being able to erase and re-do their thinking in a visual format. Some of my students struggle with math, and as we start to balance reactions, the ability to draw and color code will assist their learning as they connect ideas from the periodic table to conservation of mass.

In our classroom, students will design, implement, and assess their own experiments utilizing changes in mass to predict the products in chemical reactions by using the scales.

The scales allow students to collect data, see patterns, make predictions, and analyze their findings using numerical values. Students will develop analytical and critical thinking skills around the outliers in their data to make decisions around experimental changes and design. "How could I make this better?"

Together, the markers help students outline their thinking, while the scales provide the hard evidence to support their experimental skills.
