Help Ms. Hannon

My Students

Chemistry helps explain life and the world that surrounds students, but understanding chemistry can be difficult due to its abstract nature. I want my students to understand all that chemistry has to offer, but first they need help.

My students come from a variety of backgrounds.

We are part of one of the most unique communities in the city since we draw from all parts. They are curious and interested, so long as the material is interesting. Not every student has had consistent success in school, and when the material becomes difficult many students give up. Being able to envision the bigger picture ideas in Chemistry is a challenge and the students need visual and kinesthetic support as well.

My Project

I am requesting a variety of hands on materials that demonstrate challenging chemistry concepts or ideas. I have discovered that the idea of the atom is so foreign to most of my students and that drawing and looking at 2-d models are not sufficient for them- they need to build. I have asked for five molecular model kits. I have also requested a few materials to help students better visualize the periodic table, so they can understand how nearly EVERYTHING can be composed of only 92 elements. Additionally, I hope to use the other models of melting point, density, and viscosity to help students visualize these difficult properties related to matter.

At a time when science (especially Chemistry) is getting knocked aside for more tests and standards, I feel it is more important than ever to teach students how science can be fun, engaging, challenging and rewarding.

My goal at a high school level of science is to help students understand the fundamentals so they can see how crucial science is to their everyday lives and help them find successes so that they will continue to study it in college and beyond.
