My Students

Science should be fun and science should be challenging. Science must be taught in such a way that students from a lifelong love of the subject matter, and, hopefully, pursue a career in the science field. I teach seventh-grade science at a STEAM middle school in a urban area. I have 177 diverse learners who are taught using a hands-on, inquiry-based science curriculum.

My students are diverse.

Our school has many nationalities represented. My students are high achieving and from various different economic backgrounds. Our school is considered a school of need according to the number of students who qualify financially for free lunch programs.

Some students come to school hungry and are not truly concerned with what we have to teach them because they are overwhelmed by the thoughts of where their next meal may come from. Other students question if we actually have something to teach them that will truly make a difference in their lives. Still, others wonder if learning can truly be fun.

My Project

Our state standards are changing next year to include Chemistry. To be an effective teacher, I have to obtain fun and interactive labs for my students. By having these resources, my students will have something tangible to better understand how atoms react with one another. Many students are kinesthetic learners and understand concepts much better if they can use their hands to build and create something with Lewis Electron Dot Models Kit. The lab kits and supplies I have requested will allow my students to witness a chemical reaction using the Flinn Hands-On Chemical Element Set and to actually feel the energy that is released by it. My students are the most engaged when they are able to participate in a lab rather than me just showing them a demo. I would like to have enough materials so that everyone cannot only see but do for themselves.

My goal is to give students the opportunity to grow and become active learners in the Science classroom!

Students love having the opportunity to work cooperatively in small groups and during labs! Through using the What Is A Chemical Reaction kit, Separation of a Mixture kit and Elements, Compounds and Mixtures, my student will have a chance to learn beyond the textbooks. Students will be manipulating interactive lab stations, creating atomic models, studying the structure and composition of atoms and experiencing chemical reactions through safe and student friendly lab experiments.
