My Students

My class is an Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) class. Some of the students in my class have learning disabilities. I am a general education teacher and my partner is a special education teacher; together we design lessons to make sure all of our students are learning and being challenged daily. If you took a peek into my room, you would not be able to tell the difference between the special education and general education students. They are a happy, hard working group of children that don't let their disabilities or personal situations keep them from achieving. I work in a low income area where many of my children live in shelters or are in foster care.

My Project

This project will help introduce my students to financial literacy. In first grade children learn how to count money. Learning the value of money is a difficult concept for them to grasp.

Children learn best through hand-on activities and games.

These centers will teach them different math concepts including addition, subtracting, money and shapes. The games are kid-friendly, colorful and fun. Along with a unit on money, the children will learn about needs and wants. We talk about saving money, banking and spending. My students spend lots of time and money at the store every morning but they don't really stop to think about the financial choices they are making. I hope to make them more aware of the power of choice that they have when it comes to money.
