My Students

My first grade classroom is filled with the college graduates of 2030. We embrace grit, integrity, curiosity, and zest. We work hard so that we can graduate high school, enroll in competitive colleges and universities, graduate college, and positively impact change in our community, Detroit.

My classroom is currently home to 26, tenacious, first graders.

They call Detroit home and many of them have seen little outside of their own neighborhoods. Around 86 percent qualify for free and reduced lunch and 100 percent are black. Only 15 percent of my class came in on grade level in reading, and 19 percent in math. In only half a year, these percentages have tripled! My school, a college preparatory school, is working diligently to provide its scholars with the quality education they deserve, one that will prepare them for college. All of my scholars are eager to tackle the rigors of first grade, and they crave to know more about the world around them. They work hard so that they can go to college, graduate from college, and positively impact their communities.

My Project

In order to be fully prepared for college and for life, my scholars must be financially literate. They must know what it means to save and manage money, how to earn money, and how to interact with a market economy. My students need 5 iPad minis and cases, and 5 tablet protection plans. These resources will increase financial literacy in my classroom in three ways. First, the iPads will provide my scholars with the opportunity to explore financial literacy through interactive, student friendly games, activities, and videos. Scholars will be able to play games together and collaborate while engaging in dialog about financial literacy. Second, the iPads will be will used in a research project where scholars will research real life problems dealing with money and identify solutions for solving these problems. Lastly, the iPads will be used to assist in the creation of our classroom's very own market. Scholar's will use the iPads to research different types of goods and marketing techniques in order to create and manage their own market economy.

Through these resources and activities, my scholars will be excited to learn about, discuss, and explore financial literacy.

This excitement will foster a much needed and deeper understanding of money. These materials will assist my scholars as they save for college, attend college, and for when they begin their careers.
