My Students

My students are fun-loving, enthusiastic scientists ready to take their learning to new levels! Our population is made up of a diverse group of learners from Brooklyn, NY, including ENL students and special education students.

My goal is to continue multi-modal, project-based learning in my classroom, where my students perform their own scientific research, build models, innovate solutions to the world's most pressing problems.

They use their knowledge of coding to enhance their presentations. My students are some of the most creative, young minds I have ever met, and are always ecstatic at the start of any new project I introduce to them. It is most important that my students understand how to apply what they are learning in the classroom to the real world. We analyze case studies after each unit (for example, analyzing Hurricane Sandy during our Weather and Atmosphere unit, or The Fukashima meltdown during our Nuclear Power unit) and then conduct research on their own in order to evaluate where our curriculum fits into the real world.

My Project

Help me give my students the opportunity to learn anatomy and physiology in a hands-on, visual way with these beautiful models of the spine and brain. Each year I do a unit of the brain and nervous system, as well as mental/emotional health. I usually teach this through the lens of various conditions affecting the brain, whether it my physical or mental.

My students research conditions such as ALS, depression and bipolar disorder, stroke, aneurism, Parkinson's Disease, eating disorders, PTSD, Autism, Schizophrenia, scoliosis, and Cerebral Palsy.

I know that these models will help them visualize and better understand he structures we discuss. Ultimately, my goal is to give them the opportunity to think creatively about technologies THEY can invent to help improve the quality of life of someone living with the condition they are assigned. But to do that they must have an understanding of the challenges and obstacles these people face, which only comes with understanding the condition at a physical level. I know these models with be a great supplement to their learning.
