My Students

My students have really struggled with distance learning since the pandemic began in March, 2020 and our school district went to online school only. We returned to a hybrid model in February, 2021, but elementary music classes were still completely virtual.

We are looking forward to masked in-person learning this fall, for the first time in 18 months!

This school is a 100% poverty school where families struggle to provide basic necessities for their children. We do not have a functioning PTO/PTA group at our school, so it up to the administration to find funds for my music classes and their budget is always stretched way too thin. Funds from sources such as DonorsChoose.org help to fill in the funding gaps.

My Project

These instruments will allow my K-5 general music students to have individual instrument kits which will be stored in their cubbies for use at school this year due to Covid protocols in my district. My 4th graders will continue with playing the recorder this year and I will need to make sure I have enough recorders for new students or students who may have lost theirs from last school year. Because we are high-poverty school, we purchase recorders for the students to play.

Last school year, my K-2 students really enjoyed being able to have their own tambourine and rhythm sticks to develop their musicianship and learn how to read and perform rhythms and I know they will be excited to have them again this year.

I need to plan for the worst case scenario, in case my district returns to virtual or hybrid learning this year. The rhythm sticks, recorders and tambourines will allow my youngest students to not have to share any instruments during the continuation of the Covid-19 pandemic.
