My Students

My students live in a diverse neighborhood in the north Bronx in New York City. They are from Bangladesh, Ghana, Yemen, Dominican Republic, Harlem, and more. What they have in common is their curiosity! They are smart, engaged and engaging, thoughtful, and always ready to take on new challenges. My job is ESL teacher, which means that I'm helping them find ways to express themselves, and I love getting to know them. They inspire me every day and I can't wait to see where they go.

My Project

We make posters all the time in our class-- but we want to step up our game and use bold beautiful colors, cool lettering and let our writing really pop! We've been using the same tired markers for a long time, and we want to refresh our art resources.

We will be reading a novel soon that has lots of characters, and we want to make character charts and write out the places where these people live-- in a way that we can be excited to look at these posters all day.

My students need markers and calligraphy pens because they feel so much more invested in their work when it looks great. We've learned calligraphy a little using regular pens and now we want to go to the next level with real calligraphy pens. Having a book on calligraphy to guide will really help us create the most exciting character maps.
