My Students

The students at my school love hands-on, tactile learning. They enjoy building and solving problems with their hands. I try to give my students a diverse experience with the visual arts.

My school opened in the late 1990s and "Learning Through The Arts" was one of the founding principles.

Students build sets for their 5th grade musical. we invite local artists to come and share their artwork and work with students. The art room also uses art as a way to explore science, social studies, and literacy from a different lens.

My Project

Each Fall, students create artwork that correspond with what they learn about in science. Students make printing plates and use brayers to apply an even coat of ink on the printing plate. Then, the plates are pressed in to paper to create a print. Then the ink is reapplied and another print is made.

In my class, I try to convey that artists and scientist are both engaged in the work of investigating our world.

Hokusai created 40 different images of the iconic Mount Fuji. I would like to be able to show the full scope of his work as a compliment to the scientific information the students are learning about mountains.

Fifth grade studies landforms, so in art we study Japanese landscape prints and create our own landscape prints. Fourth grade learns about the solar system, so in art class we investigate the myths behind the names of the planets and constellations, and create images of these stories. Third Grade studies the prairie ecosystem, so in art class we create reduction prints of prairie animals. Second Grade learns about insects, so in art class we study how Renaissance artists studied nature and we create images of insects. Finally in first grade, students learn about animals and their habitats, so in art we create prints of nocturnal animals.
