This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"See to Believe." That seems to be a teenager's attitude towards everything! My students love working with concrete materials to explore mathematical concepts.

My 7th graders range from newcomers to children who have been in the country a maximum of three years.

They live in a high poverty, high crime area. Budget cuts have left our classroom with great need. Many items necessary to facilitate instruction to a variety of learning styles are out of our reach.

My Project

Students will use algebra tiles and balances to explore algebraic concepts using concrete tools. My class will be able to construct a solid foundation which they will be able to build upon in future grades. Using concrete materials they will be able to see and manipulate complex algebraic concepts. Students will use the algebra tiles to form polynomials, combine terms, simplify, and expand expressions. We will use the balances to explore equations, inequalities, and solve linear equations.

My classroom has a wide range of abilities.

A few students are able to keep up with the course work and perform at grade level. However, the majority of my students do not possess the skills we expect from a 7th grader. They come to this country willing to learn but with great gaps in their education, particularly in math and science. Using concrete materials helps them understand concepts that would otherwise be out of their reach.
