My Students

Many of my students have grown up in a vastly impoverished, drug-ridden, crime-ridden neighborhood, which makes it difficult for them to see that there are more opportunities out there than what surrounds them.

My students are creative and intelligent children whom often feel trapped by their circumstances and disabilities and are just itching for the opportunity to bust out and show what they really know.

We are comprised of a staff that not only believes that children are our future; we also believe that they can determine it. While they live in neighborhoods where many of them share a similar culture; as they move on and up in the world, what will become evident is that there will be fewer people who have encountered and overcome obstacles quite like theirs.

My Project

As a special education teacher, the Google Pixelbook will allow me to reach my students in a way that fully engages them both mentally and physically. Working in small groups and in one-on-one sessions, students can interact with the curriculum in a way they never have before. Not only will this technology impact my students' growth, it will impact mine as well. The Pixelbook will connect me to a virtual community of educators making it easier for me to engage in immediate, specific and focused conversations with peers. One in which I can not only learn from peers on my own time but be in the living rooms of my students when they need my help. The Pixelbook will also allow me to leverage the collective knowledge of the Chromebook Webstore to personalize my own growth.

Embracing a 21st-century learning model requires me to encourage the creation of learners who take intellectual risks, foster learning dispositions, and nurture a classroom community where everyone is a learner.

Access to countless education apps in the Chromebook web store and vibrant video will not only capture their imagination and the attention of a student with even the most severe attention deficit disorder but push me as an educator to use every tool this machine has to offer. They won't want to put it down, which means they won't stop learning!

This approach to teaching marries ability to content and content to skill. Without meeting our students where they are and engaging them in what attracts them we cannot develop their skills. Without skills, our students are left to memorize facts, recall details for worksheets, and relegate their educational experience to passivity. Without content, our students may engage in problem-solving experiences that fall into triviality and into relevance without rigor.
