In my classroom, 3 students consistently do not have their school-issued devices due to financial difficulties. These families are unable to afford the fee to replace their non-functional devices. Every day, instructional time is hindered when these students have to borrow devices from their peers during small group rotations. There is also the ever-present threat of these borrowed devices being damaged. The sharing of school-issued devices is stressful (bringing with it the potential to damage devices that are not their own) and a distraction from learning.
This iPad will support my ESOL students in accessing differentiated virtual instruction in reading, writing, and phonics that is essential to mastering English.
Without this iPad, these students will continue to have a decreased amount of time on devices due to the challenges presented to a 6- or 7-year-old borrowing a device, typing lengthy usernames and passwords multiple times, and navigating a non-familiar device.
Additionally, students without devices at school are also without wifi at home, preventing them from easily meeting their recommended app use time to make necessary reading, writing, and phonics improvements to be successful in 2nd grade. This iPad will support my students in learning independently and increase their motivation to engage with the lesson.
Extending their exposure to English will only bring benefits. A majority of my students only learn English at school, so maximizing their opportunities inside of the classroom is incredibly important. Please support me in supporting my students!
