Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I currently work as a school librarian at an urban title 1 school where we try and focus on STEAM concepts to help students become the leaders of tomorrow. We have wonderful students who are creative, innovative, and motivated by real world concepts. Our student population is fairly small for an urban area, being just over 400 students. This has created a strong sense of community among both students and staff at our school. Many of our students went to elementary school together just down the street and always have fun welcoming their friends from the grade below to middle school.

This close-knit group of kids are supportive of each other and truly enjoy celebrating the success of their peers.

The library is a place for the students to gather. Rather than having it be a traditionally quite space, our students utilize it as a learning hub where they can explore topics they find interesting and dive deeply into them. Since I have put different materials and resources out on shelves they students have shown curiosity in how different things work. Students at our school display true interest in discovering and understanding unknown concepts.

My Project

Many students learn from hands on work allowing them to explore concepts on a deeper level. Makerspaces allow students to express ideas in physical ways, work alongside peers, and think critically; all skills that prepare students for the future. Giving students access to materials and manipulatives can spark interests in subjects across the curriculum, allowing students to make deeper connections and better understandings of lessons. Providing a variety of materials allows endless opportunities to create and learn.

The future relies on innovative thinkers, confident collaborators, and go getters.

Adding a makerspace to the library will give all students and teachers access to a variety of materials that they can use for any project. Rather than having the materials stored in each teacher’s classroom, the library is an open area that allows everyone access to resources. Putting out these materials will give students access to use them to better understand lessons, create class projects, or even make something for fun! Students who currently visit the library enjoy creating and learning with the materials available, but could greatly benefit from more resources. Adding these products to the library will give more students the ability to access learning through a variety of outlets.
