My Students

My students want to be active contributors to the world around them. Through MakerSpace activities, students are encouraged to tinker and explore using modern technology and everyday materials in fun and engaging ways.

My 4-8 grade students are inquisitive and above average academic learners who are often expressing a desire--through both words and actions--to push the limits of their knowledge.

However, due to many community and family circumstances and barriers, school is often the only place they can actively push those boundaries on a regular basis. Our school and staff work very hard to provide engaging and relevant activities on a regular basis, but at times this is very difficult to do on a small budget in a large inner city district. The students are always quick to sign up for extra opportunities before and after school--especially when activities related to electronics, programming, or crafts are being offered.

My Project

This coming school year, we will be having MakerSpace Mondays where students will be invited to sign up for different maker activities. Sessions will be made available before and after school for small groups of interested students. Activities will be student driven and when possible, student led. When students are not in possession of the knowledge or expertise required, a suitable local expert will be brought in to lead the activity. Some possible activities include creating circuits, small scale robotics, basic and advanced programming, stop motion animation, crocheting, or duct tape wallets. They will also have the opportunity to share their work with a larger audience via social media as well as an end of the year Maker Fair. Students will learn to think outside of the box work towards solving real world issues through some fun tinkering.

The materials that will be received from this project will allow students to dabble in the worlds of engineers and computer programmers.

It will ideally open their eyes to the many possible future career paths they may one day choose to follow. In addition, it will actively engage students before and after the school day and extend their learning day in a positive way.
