My Students

"The library is an arena of possibility, opening both a window into the soul and a door onto the world." ~Rita Dove. I have the unique opportunity to revamp our Library Media Program as a Teacher Librarian. A library is much more than a warehouse for books. It is a space to empower students to see themselves as inventors, builders and creators. Makerspace allows learning new skills through trial and error, experiencing failure of an initial idea, the exploration of possible alternatives and then problem solving to improve on the idea.

My goal is to empower students and to restore the library as the heart of the school by integrating a Makerspace area for students to tinker, experiment, design, build, innovate, collaborate, explore and more!

Students can discover their hidden talents and passions by engaging in meaningful exploration with materials such as LEGOs, blocks, robots, circuit boards, and other resources.

Makerspaces provide tools and materials to encourage a maker mindset focused on creativity. Materials could be as simple as cardboard tubes and tape or as complex as circuitry boards. In Makerspaces students become active participants that take ownership of their own learning.

My Project

Large gaps in achievement and engagement continue to persist for diverse learners, particularly those from low-socioeconomic backgrounds (Martin, Tan, Greenberg). Access to Makerspaces in schools provides the opportunity for all students to become learners, leaders and problem solvers. Opportunities to engage in STEAM experiences affords students success that they may not experience in the general classroom setting.

I have had the great fortune to observe students that struggle in the traditional classroom experience success and shine as a Maker.

Instead of being the one left behind, they become the one others turn to for help. Makerspaces provide places to learn more about subjects like math, science, and technology but they are also places where students learn more about themselves and each other.

All the resources in our Makerspace serve a specific purpose. The Keva Planks and Makedo Construction Toolkits enable students to design and build concrete objects and prototypes with wood and cardboard. Students will be able to build electronic machines to complete a task, such flipping a switch to light a bulb or making a fan turn, using Snap Circuits. Raspberry Pi and the Little Bits Code Kit can be paired with each other using computer programming. Students will also be able to use them to code our Dash Robot!
