My Students

Fred Rogers said "Play is often talked about as if it were relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning." Second graders are naturally inquisitive and learn through play. I want my students to have a place that will allow them to create and acquire lifelong skills.

Our school is a vibrant K-2 elementary school of 500 students.

We are creating leaders by participating in Stephen Covey's Leader in Me program. Our second grade class has 21 students, 10 boys, and 11 girls, as well as 2 paraprofessionals and myself. The students in our class come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and capabilities. One of our students is autistic, another has physical and mental disabilities, and 2 have specific learning disabilities. Our parents are involved and volunteer their time and talent for the benefit of all our students. We use thematic units to integrate all subject areas through literacy and math. Our class is especially interested in science and math. We uses various technology devices in the classroom, such as tablets, document cameras, and interactive whiteboards to enhance learning and engage the students. We love to move, sing, dance, play, and create!

My Project

When I first learned of the Makerspace movement I knew we had to have one at our school! The philosophy behind Maker Education is that children can create and build anything given the material, time, and space. The makerspace is an area where students can invent using a variety of new or reusable materials. My vision is to start a makerspace in my classroom that can eventually grow into a makerspace for the school. Makerspace activities provide students the opportunity to collaborate and develop 21stCentury and STEM skills. Students will be allowed to have creative freedom as well as use the materials to solve real world problems. The resources(Science kit, K'Nex, littleBits, and storage cart)) in this project will provide the construction, electronic, and digital tools necessary for innovation. Students will be able to collaboratively build robots, bridges, moving vehicles, and turn any object into a computer keyboard.

Educators are preparing students for a world of technology that doesn't even exist yet!

By providing students with the tools in this project, and the opportunity to use them, in a safe creative environment, students will be able to discover talents and interests in themselves that they did not know they had. I am hoping that my students will find our classroom and school a place not just to learn the required curriculum, but a place to learn and think and grow.
