Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is a busy place! It is in use eight periods every day, including lunch. Students are practicing instruments, studying music theory, honing computer skills, and sometimes just coping with life as a teenager!

My students live in the inner city.

They pass sites and sounds that no child should have to on a daily basis simply traveling to and from school. Many students come from broken homes. Many students have to deal with drug addicted family members or physically abusive guardians. My classroom is a refuge.

My Project

My second year of computer science class is rough. Problem solving is tough. But, the show must go on! We will make dynamic web pages with images, buttons, links, and menus. We are going to be creating stories and games with Scratch. However, I want to take my students to a whole new level of maker with this open source 3D printer! I will show them how they can contribute to the source code on Github, create 3D models with Blender and openSCAD, and slice models for 3D printing with Cura and Slic3r. We will learn together how to print with a variety of materials including PLA, ABS, nylon, wood, and conductive filaments. All of this experience will help my students who are interested in programming, 3D modeling, and even joining the military as engineers!

For many of my students, school is just another thing they have to do until they're old enough to drop out or finally graduate.

Many don't look towards college or technical school primarily because they don't know what's out there. I fully believe that my students will learn vital 21st century skills that will give them an advantages in college and future careers.
