Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Bronx students remind me of myself when I was in middle school. They are getting to know themselves and the world around them through adolescent eyes. They are energetic, enthusiastic and full of creative ideas.

As 7th and 8th graders, they come to me with non-blank slates that should be added to, not erased.

They are dramatic yet resilient, both confident and insecure, and lovable each in their own way. I love letting their ideas take life in my classroom.

Many people think the Bronx is a tough place to grow up but we know that it is a good thing to be strong in a tough world.

My Project

We use a constructivist approach to learning in our classroom and we will use the Maker Space Strategy anytime we see fit. With all of these supplies at our fingertips we can create and explore our ideas right at our desks. We will design projects and make visual examples of our ideas to share with others. The full class sets of mini white boards will be especially useful. Students can design, edit, re-create and share ideas without wasting paper. The construction paper, glue, tape, scissors and staples are all necessary materials for creating work that reflects our imaginations. The 3-hole punch will make it simple to include our work in a binder. The large supply of pre-sharpened pencils will give us the ability to edit yet save our ideas. The timers will come in very handy when we are conducting mathematical experiments (i.e.: does the length of your hand affect how fast you can write?) When we build things ourselves, they have more value and will be memorable long after class has ended. Math is sometimes difficult to relate to the real world but we can do it with the right materials within our reach. Our curiosity will be rewarded.
