Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember when you curiosity was so strong that you took apart you favorite electronic toy and had to put it back together just to see how it works? Well this is the challenge that is facing our students.

My school is located the South Bronx.

The school is surrounded by housing projects. Most of the students come from low income families. A lot of our students' parents cannot afford to buy their children all of the school supplies that they need to get through the school year. In September, students from our school had the opportunity to be presenters live on stage at the World Maker Faire at the New York Hall of Science in Queens, New York. They taught audience members how to make two different hydroponic gardens and invited audience members to help them make them. The students were very excited and the experience fueled their appetite to keep on investigating. They received a Maker students blue ribbon for the students presentation. The students love to come to science and investigate how things work. They especially love to build things and test things out and put their theories to work.

My Project

With the supplies that we requested our students can move their investigations to the next level. They are interested in finding out how robots work. With the Tin Can robot kits they can "MAKE" build their own robots and test them. Another group is interested in the engineering and building of bridges. With he basswood bridge kit and the K'Nex kit they will learn how different materials are used to build different types of bridges. Another group will be working on building small cars and testing them out. Hopefully in the future we will be able to add small motors to them. Finally our 4th grade has been learning about electricity. they have been using house hold products to make squishy circuit. They made conductive dough and lite up LED bulbs. A group of young ladies came up with the idea of trying to add LED lights to dream catchers. Yet another group wants to learn how to build rockets, hence the launch kit. They have so many ideas and this would be a great start.

Because they were inspired by their experience at the MAKER FAIRE, their minds and ideas have taken off.

The school budget does not allow for the ideas that the students have and I as their science teacher can not afford to supply them with everything by myself. So I am asking for the help of the generous donors to help us. Our "MAKER" students are the future scientists. When we empower children they take their learning into their own hands, please help us make this possible. THANK YOU.
