PS116Q, The William C. Hughley School, is located in an impoverished area of Jamaica, Queens. The growing population of 825 students is also 85% free lunch. Year after year I find that more than 1/2 of the class doesn't receive the TFK subscription. I have heard all of the excuses over the years and what it boils down to is that the parents can't afford it. I am writing to ask for a donation of a subscription to TFK for my class for the year. This is wonderful to teach current events, in and around the world. This resource is invaluable to a student in the third grade. I find that the students that pay for their subscription are very generous and let other students look on with them, but it is as difficult as 2 or 3 kids sharing a computer. Many of my students are English Language Learners and are struggling to learn to read fluently. I feel that this would be an excellent source of non-fiction reading. The articles are a great way to introduce journalism and teach comprehension at the same time. Time For Kids is an adventure that every student in the third grade needs, just like a textbook. If this dream can be realized we will share our TIME For Kids subscription with our neighboring class. We are going to recycle them, once we have completed our assignments. We work on the premise that we will share and share alike. My students feel good sharing these wonderful articles with their peers. As my students explore the world through TFK, they will tap into literacy, multicultural studies and geography. All of these studies will be wrapped up in one issue of Time For Kids. How lucky we would be!
